Nearly drowning in her listless work atmosphere, completely unaware of the real reason behind the Emerald Hotel’s decline, Anna innocently stumbles upon something that just might be the shred of hope everyone has been searching for. But when Anna runs to Matt, ready to relay the news, she’s met with a drunken declaration of his love for her. Matt’s not only her good friend, he’s her boss, so to say Anna is caught completely off-guard would be like calling the moon pretty-- it’s a bit far from the mark of reality. Knowing Matt is tottering between depression and sanity, Anna wishes she could fix everything by telling him she loves him back, but she just can’t. So she decides to search for someone who can. Perhaps the solution lies with Matt’s father, Tom. Despite the fact everyone believes he is dead, after finding his old journal Anna has reason to believe otherwise. Embarking on a search through shark infested waters, to a hellish island in the middle of nowhere, Anna discovers that the man she is looking for is indeed alive. A father’s love certainly isn’t the same as the love of a woman, but Anna hopes it will be enough to bring Matt back to himself and relieve her from the burden of guilt that’s been slowly smothering her.

Debut author Jessica Peterson writes an enjoyable summer read in The Key to Life. Nicely using present time and flashbacks, Peterson creatively pulls the reader into the story.

Currently working for a failing hotel, Anna Wilson is helping the current owner, Matt Hayes, figure out why they are losing so much money. Anna uses her problem-solving skills to deduce who is stealing from the company and how to organize the remodeling crews, a trait I really liked about her character. Depressed since his father, Tom, disappeared at sea four years ago, Matt turns to alcohol for comfort. Matt and Anna are friends, but his feelings run way deeper than friendship. Anna loves Matt only as a friend and decides to find the one person who will love him unconditionally, Tom. Anna's dedication to her friends is another endearing quality that drew her character to me. In order to find Tom, Anna turns to her ex-boyfriend, Robert Andino, another man of the sea. While going on a dangerous adventure, trying to find Tom, Anna and Robert work on their unresolved issues. And, Anna accepts that she doesn't love Robert and will never be more than friends with Matt. With this closure, Anna is open to find the person who will give her the love that she needs.

The Key to Life is a character-driven story with a touch of adventure and suspense, making it an entertaining read.

Loved it , and I know the author...
In this romance novel, Anna, an employee at a failing hotel, tries to help her friends while also deciding where her heart lies. This is a promising debut novel, but suffers from problems common to new authors (e.g., telling instead of showing, head-hopping, pacing/backstory).

Disclosure of Material Connection I received a digital copy of this book free from the author. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable easy read. Its an ideal beach read.
As in all my reviews I don't go into descriptions. I will just say there are quite a few lovely characters in this book.
Personally I'd have liked a different ending but that said it wouldn't deter me from re reading this little gem.
Received from author in return for an honest review.
If you're looking for a good book to curl up with, The Keys to Life is the book for you. Usually my genre is not Women's Lit, but this one captivated my attention. It's a cross between "Friends" and "How I Met Your Mother". The story has unrequited love, unfinished business, shenanigans and self- fulfillment woven into a workable tapestry. You find yourself hoping for a happy home coming for a long list family member presumes to have been lost at sea. I don't want want to spoil the read for you, so check out The keys to Life for yourself.

The book for review is "The Keys to Life' by Jessica Peterson

I place this book in the genre of romance and fiction.

Anna works out of the Emerald Hotel. The business is losing money and fast. She comes across why. She reports the findings to her boss and friend Matt who doesn't handle it very well. He is drunk and has professed his love for her. That is not Matt's only issue. He is still dealing with problems when it comes to his father.

She is caught by surprise but can't deal with it right now as the hotel has to be saved. At the same time she's helping Matt who has fallen into a coma due to his excessive drinking. But that is not his only problems. The book weaves out other issues that need to be resolved before the happy ending occurs.

I had a few problems with this book. Anna is not believable. She is a very skilled character who does not seem to have any flaws, every main character has to have flaws. The ending of the book or what I perceive to be the ending comes about in chapter 12 or 13.

This book has a lot of potential if the scenes were rearranged in an order that supported it. There are two strong scenes that are included that make the book work. If that was done this book would get a higher rating from me.
I was going to give a summary of this book, but I didn't want to give any spoilers. I gave this book a 3 star. I did like the book and its a shame things didn't happen the way I wanted them to happen, but that is of no fault of the author. Some missing pieces of the book that I would have liked to have seen. I think we could have heard about the journal when Anna read it, while Matt was in the coma. Not later on in the book when she seeks to go on this voyage to find Matts father.

I loved Anna"s character because she goes above and beyond when it comes to friends. I'm not sure why she came to the revelation that Matt needed his father in his life and not another woman. Matt has fallen in love with Anna, but she does not have the same feelings for him. I thought she was going to fix him up with one of her friends, but then was surprised when she went to her ex-boyfriend and proposed this voyage to him. I was surprised he said yes.

This voyage was far fetched and its not very believable that someone would do that for a man she didn't love. This voyage is life threatening and they don't know if they will come back. Now if thats not love, I don't know what is.
